Thrifting

So, I've been meaning to make a post about thrifting since last Thursday. Here's the story: I took some old frocks to my local Buffalo Exchange. I managed to get enough in trade to get this lovely dress (with shoulder cutouts and a tan skinny belt) for free and even get a few dollars back (which covered the cost of parking):

Seattle is a wonderful place for thrifting {v.) the act of buying things you love and being thrifty simultaneously}. My go-to place for thrifting in Seattle has been Value Village. Some say that it's even cheaper than Goodwill... One of my best finds at VV have been this beautiful pair of black pumps for $7:

Another favorite are these two silk scarves in the style of the ever popular Hermes brand (~$5 each):

And speaking of beautiful scarves, I picked up these two beauties from a vendor at the street market on Portobello Road in London for 1 British pound each:

If you have the patience for it, thrifting is a great way to find quality and unique merchandise for an affordable price. Here are a few great places to thrift or find great vintage pieces in the Seattle area:

Musings on: Stories

I've been thinking quite a bit recently about how there a literally billions of stories happening all over the world to billions of people in billions of moments. Even just your neighbors, people who live not even 100 yards from you, have complete lives with stories you've never heard or imagined. Now, the stories that directly touch or affect a person tend to be the most significant to said person, right? Wrong. Well, not wrong but not always right either. You see, that's kind of the point of art. Literature, paintings, music, and even blogging are all windows into stories that may not be occurring/have occurred adjacent to our lives but they have something important or meaningful to say about the shared human experience. I (and I believe several other people) think that one of the most fun and important things that we humans should do in our time here on earth is to understand as much about the universe as possible, including the inner recesses and workings of our minds and souls.

Last December, I read a book by John Green called An Abundance of Katherines. It was extremely good and if you haven't read it, borrow it from your local library or, better yet, buy yourself a copy at an independent book store near you! {Also here is the Amazon link if you are lazy.} [/tangent]
In this book, the main character, Colin, sets out on a road trip with his best friend in an attempt to get over a particularly nasty break-up. They pull off the road to find a tourist attraction in the small town of Gunshot, TN. Far from the length of a pit-stop, their stay in this small town becomes a huge adventure that changes their lives. Every decision we make, every person we interact with, makes little changes in the courses of our lives, like ripples in a pool.

Felt Hats

Trend alert: Felt hats. I like them. I have myself a wide-brimmed black felt hat that I feel oh-so-stylish in.

My favorite siren songstress Florence Welch has been spotted out and about in a couple different hats.

And as if it needs saying, models seen sporting any trend on the streets guarantees it's cool factor.

Daiane Conterato
{Ford Models}

Bailey Leiter
{Elle}

At this point you may be asking yourself: "Where can I get myself one of these fabulous hats?" Well, fret not. I've managed to find a beautiful hat at virtually every price point.

Forever 21 - $17.80
The Forever 21 website has a large selection of wide-brimmed felt beauties but I loved the feather detailing on this one. It also comes in grey, magenta, and teal.

Urban Outfitters - $34
Here is an example of the felt hat in a loosely constructed fedora style. (Sorry the image is so small. Click through to the website for the full size!)

ModCloth - $39.99
I love this beautiful green color. And I absolutely adore the way it's styled with the model's hair color and the lip color and the blouse. Perfect.

And now for a couple of more expensive ones:
Free People - $78

Net-a-Porter - $205

And bringing home the gold:
Lanvin - $776

So get out there and wear those statement hats loud and proud!

Albums I bought in 2011 (part 2)

(Continued from previous post)

{11} I have been an avid fan of Florence + the Machine since I was able to see them in concert in April of 2010. Andbutso this summer I was very surprised to find a secret album I didn't have. It's called "Lungs - the B-sides" and it rocks. {Get it here or on iTunes}

{12} Ellie Goulding is a flawless human being. That is all. "Lights" is the name of the album. {Get it here or on iTunes}

{13} Vince Guaraldi Trio's "A Charlie Brown Christmas". I may have bought this album in October. So sue me. {Get it here or on iTunes}

{14} An exciting release this year was Coldplay's new album "Mylo Xyloto". I love the dance vibe and am very much looking forward to seeing them perform in Seattle in April. {Get it here or on iTunes}

{15} Florence + the Machine delivered a knock out with their second album titled "Ceremonials". I honestly don't know how their going to top this, but to be honest, I didn't know how they were going to top "Lungs" either... Anyway, I order the deluxe box set including the bonus disc which had EIGHT songs on it including three acoustic tracks and two demos. {Get it here or on iTunes}

{16} I'm not sure if a single with three tracks counts as an album but I'm including this one because I think everyone should know about it. The album is called "Permafrost" and it's by a young Canadian girl by the name of Laurena. I heard about this music in this Vlogbrothers video and you can find the original music video here. {Get it here or on iTunes}

{17} The seventeenth and final album I bought in 2011 was Laura Marling's "A Creature I Don't Know". I've been a fan a Laura Marling for a while now and I'm definitely feeling her folksy vibe. {Get it here or on iTunes}

I hope this small glimpse into the world of music I enjoyed in 2011 paints a bit of a picture of me.

Albums I Bought in 2011 (part 1)

I know I'm a little late to the party of listing my favorite things of 2011, but better late than never!

{1} The first album I downloaded in 2011 was "1" by the Beatles. It's a compilation of all the band's #1 hits. For me, 2011 was quite a bit about classic tunes. {Get it here or on iTunes}

{2} Barton Hollow by the Civil Wars was such a treat when I purchased it last February. It's about as acoustic as music comes, and I am a huge fan. I was lucky enough to go to their concert here in Seattle in November. Unbelievable. {Get it here or on iTunes}

{3} I think the rest of the world agrees with me in saying that Adele's new album "21" gives a sassy "so what!" to the idea of "sophomore slump". I thoroughly enjoyed "19" and was eager to come back for "21". {Get it here or on iTunes}

{4} "Rumors" by Fleetwood Mac: I'm not going to lie and say that Glee wasn't the inspiration for this purchase. However, I haven't regretted it. {Get it here or on iTunes}

{5} In June, I purchased another killer second album, the self-titled "Bon Iver". The hauntingly beautiful music is perfect for rainy autumn days. {Get it here or on iTunes}

{6} A month later, I bought another self-titled album, "The Head and the Heart". This Seattle based band knocks it out of the park with their folksy tunes. {Get it here or on iTunes}

{7} At the same time that I purchased "The Head and the Heart" (at this totally cool record shop in Ballard), I got a collab album called "Rave on Buddy Holly". It's basically a tribute album in which artists like Florence + the Machine, Modest Mouse, She & Him, My Morning Jacket, and loads of other cool cats do covers of Buddy Holly songs. {Get it here or on iTunes}

{8} Over the summer, I got a little bit obsessed with Americana, and more specifically the book Cold Mountain by Charles Frazier. I watched the film and purchased the soundtrack which features Jack White, Alison Krauss, and the Sacred Harp Singers. This was definitely one of my favorites of 2011. {Get it here or on iTunes}

{9} As many of us know (and are still grieving), Harry Potter ended this summer. For me, the music accompanying the films has been one of the best parts of the experience. "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows-Part 2 (soundtrack)" was another one of my favorites. {Get it here or on iTunes}

{10} The next album I downloaded was recommended to me by a friend and I have really been enjoying it despite not being able to understand French. It is "En t'attendant" by Mélanie Laurent. {Get it here or on iTunes}

This list is to be continued....

An Introduction

I've come to the conclusion that blogging is most fun when you are blogging about things you love. Hence, I've created this blog for myself to keep track of just that: things I love. Hopefully my readers can find it as a source of inspiration for their daily lives and can find it in their hearts to share things with me that inspire them.
